Volvo has lofty ambitions. Last week, Volvo showed a refreshed XC40, before revealing updated XC60 and XC90 SUVs a couple of days ago. But that’s just the start, with Volvo announcing a major product expansion, with 13 new vehicles set to be released by 2030, and we think some of them will see Volvo return to its station wagon roots.
The Swedish automaker says this is the “largest and most ambitious global product push in its 99-year history,” and Volvo says its lineup will include both fully electric cars and third-generation hybrids. Volvo will focus on developing models for specific markets, with six new cars for China and seven new cars for Western markets. The models bound for our shores will ride on the SPA2 and SPA3 platforms. The former can already be found in the Polestar 3 (now gone from the U.S. market) and Volvo EX90, while the latter underpins the Volvo EX60.
Volvo also says the plans will include “cars in new segments,” although it didn’t elaborate on what segments these will be. However, in one of its presentation slides, Volvo said it was planning “new low & high body types,” and we think the “low” vehicles will likely be station wagons and sedans.
This lines up with a recent report from Automotive News, which stated that Volvo was developing a new electric sedan and wagon that are set to be sold in the United States. The models could be called ES60 and EV60, and would go on sale in 2028. The models would ride on the SP3 platform, with prices starting in the low-$50,000 range. Another Automotive News report points to a new compact electric SUV called the EX50, set to replace the recently departed EX40, and arrive in fall 2027 on the SPA3 platform.
A potential return of a Volvo wagon is an exciting proposition. Volvo became famous for its station wagons, particularly for the long-running 240 of the ’70s and ’80s, and the sporty 850 T-5R from 1995. But the rise of SUVs as the dominant form factor for family cars saw sales of Volvo’s wagons decline, and the V90 and V60 are both being discontinued in the U.S. after the 2026 model year. Hopefully it won’t be too long until we see their electric replacements.
