Ask someone to picture a future genius, and they’ll usually picture a child prodigy: the kid solving equations three grades ahead, the eight-year-old chess prodigy, the young violinist giving recitals before puberty.

Giftedness, in the popular imagination, announces itself early and simply needs to be identified and accelerated. That belief has organized how families, schools and talent programs operate for nearly a century.

Find the standout child. Give them more hours, more intensity, more specialized coaching, sooner than everyone else. The assumption is that early excellence is a preview of adult excellence — a smaller, rougher draft of the same person.

A landmark 2025 review in the journal Science suggests that assumption is largely backwards. Led by sports scientist Arne Güllich and an international team of psychologists, the researchers noticed a strange gap in decades of giftedness research: almost none of it had actually studied people who became the best in the world.

Instead, it studied young or “sub-elite” performers — talented students, promising junior athletes, conservatory kids — and quietly assumed their developmental patterns would generalize upward. To correct this, Güllich’s team pooled the developmental histories of nearly 35,000 of the most accomplished adults alive, including Nobel laureates, Olympic medalists, elite chess grandmasters and leading classical composers, and asked a more precise question: not how gifted children perform, but how the actual best-in-the-world adults got there.

What they found held up with striking consistency across every single field they examined — science, sport, music and competitive games that otherwise have almost nothing in common.

The Slow Burn Rule Of ‘Gifted’ People

Three patterns kept surfacing. First, the young people who stand out as the best in their age group are usually not the same people who go on to become the best as adults — early excellence and adult excellence turned out to be only weakly connected, and in some fields barely connected at all.

Second, the people who eventually reached world-class status tended to improve slowly and unevenly in their early years. Many weren’t the strongest in their own cohort as children; some were unremarkable by the standards of their peer group for years at a stretch.

Third, and most strikingly, future elites rarely specialized in a single narrow lane from the outset. Instead, they moved through a range of subjects, sports, genres or fields before anything crystallized into a primary focus.

This is what I call the ‘slow burn’ rule: excellence odoesn’t announce itself early and then accelerate along a straight, visible line. It tends to build slowly, sideways and often invisibly, through a stretch of life that looks — to an anxious parent, a coach or an achievement-minded culture — indistinguishable from a lack of direction.

Why ‘Slow Burn’ Wandering Outperforms Laser Focus

This complicates one of psychology’s most influential ideas about achievement: deliberate practice — not raw ability — is what separates the good from the truly great. Güllich’s review doesn’t discard deliberate practice — the value of sustained, effortful training isn’t in question. What it challenges is the timing and narrowness that talent programs have built around that theory: the assumption that specialized intensity should start as early as possible and stay locked onto one target.

The researchers offered three explanations for why breadth so often outperforms early focus, and each maps onto a well-established psychological idea:

  1. A person’s strongest-fit domain is rarely the first one they try, so sampling widely increases the odds of eventually finding it. Developmental psychologists have long studied a related phenomenon called identity foreclosure — committing early and firmly to a single identity or path without ever exploring alternatives — and generally find that foreclosed commitments are more fragile than ones reached through genuine exploration.
  2. Learning across varied domains appears to build a kind of general learning capacity — something closer to cognitive flexibility than to any single skill — that keeps paying dividends once a person eventually does commit to a specialty. It’s the difference between practicing one narrow skill and practicing the underlying act of learning itself.
  3. Intense, narrow focus imposed too early carries real risk of burnout, injury or the quiet erosion of intrinsic motivation that self-determination theory identifies as the engine behind sustained effort. Spreading commitment across two or three pursuits reduces the odds that a single setback — a coach's criticism, an injury, a bad semester — ends the entire pursuit before it had a chance to mature.

How You Can Use the ‘Slow Burn Rule’

The practical takeaway isn’t “let children drift” — the review is explicit that eventual specialization still matters enormously. What it reframes is the relationship between breadth and depth: rather than competing for the same limited hours, breadth appears to be part of what makes deep mastery durable later on.

Güllich’s own guidance is to actively support young people in exploring two or three genuine interests rather than pushing early specialization, and the domains don’t need any obvious relationship to each other. Language and mathematics work. So do geography and philosophy. The researchers reach, notably, for Einstein — a physicist who took his violin as seriously as his equations for most of his adult life, not as a hobby competing with genius but arguably as part of its architecture.

There’s a quieter reassurance in this for people well past childhood, too. Most adults have some version of the same anxious memory: the friend who seemed ahead in their 20s, the career changed midstream, the interest abandoned and picked back up, the sense of being unfocused while everyone else appeared to have a plan. The ‘slow burn rule’ suggests that wandering was rarely wasted time. For the people who eventually do the most exceptional work, the wandering often turns out to have been the work all along, it just doesn’t get recognized as such until long after it's finished.
