Methodology: Business Insider reviewed campaign donations reported to the Federal Election Commission as of September 24. So-called "dark money" groups are not legally required to disclose their donors, often because they are organized as nonprofit organizations. This story also focuses on donations made by individuals and couples rather than by companies unaffiliated with any specific megadonor. These numbers also don't include state-based donations, which can be quite significant in their own right.
