A New ‘Attack on Titan’ Project Is on the Way

The studio behind the first half of Attack on Titan just dropped a teaser

Attack on Titan may have finished its run in 2023, but it seems like more pain and suffering may be on the horizon. WIT Studio revealed that it has an Attack on Titan-related announcement coming on Aug. 20. The company's cryptic post reads, “It seems that they, during ‘that period,’ will be holding a special dinner.” This message was posted with a promotional image featuring Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Hange, and Erwin. The accompanying visual is attributed to Isayama Hajime, the manga's author; Kodansha, the manga’s publisher; and the Attack on Titan The Final Season Production Committee, the group that funded the anime’s 35-episode “final season” (which was actually two seasons and two specials).
The announcement is surprising for a few reasons. First, the anime has already fully adapted Isayama’s manga with its aptly titled Final Season. The anime's finale even received a compilation film, The Last Attack, which packaged together the series' last two specials alongside an extra sequence.
The other unexpected element is that this announcement came from WIT Studio, which hasn’t been the series’ primary animation outfit since 2019. While the team handled the show’s first 59 episodes, MAPPA took over production for the Final Season, which ran from 2020 to 2023. Since then, WIT has worked on shows like Spy x Family and Ranking of Kings.
However, the reveal makes a bit more sense in the context of Attack on Titan producer Tetsuya Kinoshita’s comments last year. During the premiere of Attack on Titan – The Official Concert – Beyond the Walls World Tour, he said that “we plan to continue creating films like Last Attack, concerts like this one, and various game collaborations moving forward.” The video game Attack on Titan 3 is out Dec. 10, but there aren’t any officially announced anime projects in the works.
As for the post’s cryptic text, it’s possible that the “special dinner” refers to the series’ preoccupation with cannibalism. As for the phrase “that period,” it’s hard to say when this new project would take place. If the teaser image is related, it suggests this is a potential prequel set before the Final Season (when the six characters shown were still alive). We’ll have to wait until next Thursday to know for sure.
