PLAYA VISTA, Calif. – Before he sat down in a refurbished conference room, New Orleans Pelicans guard Trey Murphy looked through the office window.
Below him, Murphy could see a handful of NBA players either scrimmaging or completing individual workouts at the National Basketball Players Association’s new player-owned training facility. Nearly two year after the LA Clippers vacated their practice facility here and moved to Intuit Dome in nearby Inglewood, the NBPA made what it called a “sizable investment” in renovating the facility through its licensing revenue with expanded signage, amenities and space.
“I’m grateful to have something like this,” said Murphy, who is also the NBPA’s Vice President. “You walk in the gym and your mind starts to race. I see a lot of NBA players. I’m going to have to lock in and make sure that I’m been working, too. So it’s a little bit of healthy competition.”
That healthy competition will resume throughout the NBA’s offseason.
Matteo Zuretti, the NBPA’s Chief Player Experiences Officer, said that about 25 players plan to train on Tuesday at the new facility and that it plans to host about another 15 training sessions before all of the NBA’s 30 teams begin training camp in late September. But that number could fluctuate based on interest considering the facility NBPA support staff can be on call to operate the facility every day at all hours.
“Being ‘player-first’ is making sure that you are focused on the things that make the guys better in their career,” said David Kelley, the NBPA’s executive director. “Things that makes them better in their career is having a training facility that actually allows them to train.”

The new training facility features two full basketball courts and eight total baskets, making the setup amenable for full-court scrimmages as well as half-court drills and individual workouts. It has a training room both for treatment and to rehab injuries, a sauna, steam room, dry floating, massage therapy room and meditation pod. It features both a weight room and a separate room that features turf, bikes, rowing machines, medicine balls, slam balls, jump ropes, battle ropes, kettle bells and weighted sleds. The facility has family rooms and conference rooms as well as a kitchen that can serve smoothies, custom meals and assorted snacks.
The new facility is part of the launch of PLYRS UNTD, which is the NBPA’s commercial and fan-facing brand. The NBPA has also launched a new app that outlines all the training facilities that NBA players can use in different markets.

“We have everything here,” Murphy said. “We literally do not have to go anywhere else to work out. You also have all of the players here in one spot.”

For the past eight years, the NBPA has overseen a practice facility in New York City around Midtown. Visiting teams have used that facility to practice and hold shootarounds, while Knicks, Nets and players on other teams can use that facility for informal workouts during the offseason.
But the NBPA found it increasingly valuable to have a similar practice facility in Los Angeles. Matteo estimates that about 200 players visit LA during the summer. Rico Hines has overseen off-season scrimmages at UCLA. Players also often train at Orange County. But the NBPA wanted to use the Clippers’ previous facility as an additional training option for a few reasons. Renovations became easier because of the existing infrastructure. The facility is located about 15 to 20 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This could also strengthen chemistry among NBA players and the NBPA.
“There wasn’t a spot like that in LA that had everything in one place with full courts,” Murphy said. “So having a one place like that is a one-stop shop is beautiful.”
To make this facility a one-stop shop. the NBPA sought player input on how to fill out its weight room, turf room and kitchen. There is a whiteboard outside of the trainers’ room that featured player suggestions on sticky notes. Some of the suggestions: yoga mats, sleds, leg extension machines, smoothies, modalities, saunas, massages, cold and hot tubs and acupuncture treatment. The facility also plans to add additional turf outside of the facility to give players the options to train both inside and outside.
NBA players have the freedom to train by themselves, with groups or with individual trainers. The NBPA does not currently plan to use the facility to host any pre-draft workouts to avoid complications with teams and agents. But it will likely serve as an option both for prospects and NBA players to train on their own.
Said Zuretti: “Players can put inside this box whatever they need and whatever they want.”
