Naughty Dog Confirms Major Intergalactic Milestone Ahead of Sony’s State of Play

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has wrapped shooting, pointing to a release window

The Last of Us and Uncharted developer Naughty Dog is hard at work on its next game, the sci-fi space adventure Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and has just hit a major milestone in the PlayStation 5 exclusive's development. The studio announced Monday that shooting on the game's cinematic content has wrapped, giving us a new indicator about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet's release date.

In a post on Bluesky, Naughty Dog announced: "That is a wrap on the very ambitious Intergalactic cinematic shoot! This cast killed it! Cannot wait to show you their incredible work when the time is right!"

The post features a picture of Intergalactic star Tati Gabrielle wearing a performance capture suit and wielding a prop gun, but doesn't reveal much beyond that. Fortunately, we can look back at Naughty Dog's precedent to infer what wrapping on a game's cinematic shoot means for its release date.

Back in April 2019, Neil Druckmann, game director of The Last of Us Part 2, announced that performance capture shooting had wrapped "on Ellie, Joel, and the most ambitious cinematic shoot we’ve ever done." The Last of Us Part 2 ultimately shipped in June 2020, after a pair of delays. The Last of Us Part 2 was originally slated for release on Feb. 21, 2020, but Druckmann said the game was delayed because “we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality.”

When does Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet come out?

If Naughty Dog follows a development schedule similar to The Last of Us Part 2, we could get Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet sometime next summer, possibly between June and August. Naughty Dog hasn't committed to a release date yet, but signs are pointing to a mid-2027 release window.

Naughty Dog's update on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is curiously timed. The developer posted its latest update to social media just a few hours after Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a new State of Play showcase for Thursday, Sept. 3. Will Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet be there? It seems more likely than ever that it will be, and that fans will get a new peek at the game ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2026. We haven't gotten a substantial update on the game, officially, since March 2025.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was announced in December 2024 at that year's The Game Awards showcase. The new franchise is set thousands of years into the future and gives players control of Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who winds up stranded on a distant planet called Sempiria — from which no one in more than 600 years has escaped. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been in development since 2020, according to Naughty Dog. Oscar-winning musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are scoring the game's soundtrack.
