Meta’s Instagram proudly launched a new logo Thursday — its first update in a decade — and the trolling has already begun.
“The wordmark at the top of the app hasn’t changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri wrote in a post on the platform. “Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram.”
Instagram fans immediately latched on to the fact that the stylized “r” in the new logo could be easily confused with another letter, like “z” or “u.” In addition, the “s” looks like it might be an “a.”
“Is it just me or It reads : instagzam ❓,” one commenter said in reply to Mosseri’s big reveal. Another user commented, “Instagwam – how a toddler would pronounce it. Perfect.”
Someone else quipped: “Instaguam! Nice to see the US territory finally getting its due.” And another user complained, “It’s barely readable. Does it even pass accessibility checks? Booo. I might be the outspoken minority, but do not like.”
Social media consultant Matt Navarra weighed in on the change, writing in a post on X, “Design peeps are going to have a fun day tearing it apart. For what it’s worth, i dig it. Fresh, modern, true to the original. Although some are saying it reads: Instagzam. I dig that 😆”
Mosseri seemed to be bracing for a strong reaction. In cross-posting the logo announcement on Threads, Meta’s Twitter-like offshoot, he wrote, “Thought I’d share this on Threads [too] and see what the hot takes might be.”
Meanwhile, other commenters groused that Instagram isn’t addressing more pressing issues on the platform, such as providing a way to filter out AI-generated content or stamping out bots.
“Adam, while Instagram gets a new look, thousands of legitimate creators and businesses are losing their accounts without clear explanations or real support,” Resiliência Humana, an account with 12.9 million Instagram followers, wrote in reply to Mosseri. “Please don’t forget the people behind these pages. We need answers and a real path to recovery.”
The multihued Instagram icon, an abstract representation of a camera, isn’t changing. For the record, here is what the previous, cursive-styled Instagram wordmark looks like:
