Forgotten 0/4 Magic Creature Protects a Popular Reality Fracture Commander From Enemy Attacks

A previously overlooked Magic: The Gathering creature has suddenly become much more expensive thanks to Reality Fracture and its apparent usefulness as an upgrade for the set’s new Multiverse Reforged Commander deck.
Onakke Oathkeeper, a rare originally released in 2023’s Commander Masters, has spiked nearly 350% in price as players hunt down ways to protect Jace, Multiverse Architect and the veritable army of planeswalkers surrounding him. According to MTGStocks, Onakke Oathkeeper was worth just over $1 as recently as July before its price suddenly began rocketing upward in late September.
The real buying frenzy appears to have started following the reveal of Reality Fracture’s Multiverse Reforged Commander deck, which puts Jace himself in the command zone. A whopping 145 near-mint copies of Onakke Oathkeeper sold on TCGplayer on Sept. 18 alone – more sales than during the previous two months combined. Oathkeeper isn’t included in the precon, but it looks like an extremely natural upgrade.
Onakke Oathkeeper Gives Jace Some Much-Needed Breathing Room

Propaganda and Ghostly Prison famously charge opponents two mana for each creature sent your way, while cards like Windborn Muse, Sphere of Safety, and Norn’s Annex provide their own variations on the classic “sure, you can attack me… if you pay up” game plan.
There’s just one problem: Propaganda and its ilk protect you – not your planeswalkers.
Onakke Oathkeeper fills that surprisingly specific hole by forcing opponents to pay one mana for each creature attacking a planeswalker you control. That effect is particularly annoying alongside Jace, Multiverse Architect, who already forces each opponent to pay two mana at the beginning of combat or lose the ability to attack Jace planeswalkers that turn. Even after paying Jace’s tax, Oathkeeper can make sending an entire army his way an expensive proposition.
Reality Fracture has provided plenty of new reasons to keep your planeswalkers protected. The set introduced a small army of new ‘walkers (as well as ‘walker tokens), while Jace’s Machinations has already helped send one little-used planeswalker’s price soaring on the secondary market.
The Oathkeeper Can Do More Than Play Defense

For six mana, it can exile itself from the graveyard to return a planeswalker directly from the graveyard to the battlefield, which opens the door for some decidedly unpleasant shenanigans (for your foes, at least).
High-impact planeswalkers like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Karn Liberated, and Teferi, Hero of Dominaria are obvious resurrection targets, but Oathkeeper gets even more interesting alongside cards that manipulate loyalty counters. Doubling Season can let certain returning planeswalkers arrive with enough loyalty to immediately threaten their ultimate, while proliferate engines like Evolution Sage and Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus can rapidly push them toward their nastiest abilities.
Then there are dedicated Superfriends staples like The Chain Veil, which can squeeze additional activations out of a crowded planeswalker board. Oathkeeper doesn’t enable those shenanigans itself, of course, but it can help keep the pieces alive long enough for them to become a serious problem.
The spike does come with one enormous caveat: Onakke Oathkeeper remains a highly specialized Commander card. It was also printed exclusively in Commander Masters, meaning its newfound demand is colliding with a relatively limited supply. That makes Oathkeeper exactly the sort of card that can move quickly when players identify it as a natural upgrade for a brand-new Commander precon.
Still, Reality Fracture has already demonstrated an impressive ability to turn forgotten pieces of cardboard into suddenly desirable Commander staples. Words of Worship recently experienced an even more dramatic surge thanks to another new Reality Fracture Commander interaction.
While Onakke Oathkeeper may not be the flashiest upgrade for Jace’s new deck, keeping its most important planeswalkers alive apparently pays pretty well these days.
