Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Walt Disney Animation assemble for one big hype sesh

Two years after Disney used D23 to hype the futures of Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Disney Animation, and its theme parks, the company is back in Anaheim to ask: What comes next?

The company has a new CEO in former parks chief Josh D’Amaro, Toy Story 5 is a billion-dollar hit, and the streaming business is on firmer ground as a consolidation of Disney Plus and Hulu looms. But The Mandalorian & Grogu and the live-action Moana underperformed, Marvel's Avengers plans feel like a gamble instead of a sure thing, and YouTube #content remains an existential threat. In 2019, nothing looked bigger than Disney. In 2026, the mega-corp's future looks unclear.

The only sure thing, the only real savior of a flailing cultural icon: more Kingdom Hearts. We can all agree on that.

Kingdom Hearts 4 gets 2027 release date and a brand-new Pixar world

Kingdom Hearts fans got some major surprise updates at D23 on Friday. Disney and Square Enix revealed a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 that showcases a new world based on Pixar's Coco.

The new 90-second trailer shows Coco stars Miguel and Hector, rendered closely to their appearance in Pixar's film, and Sora decked out in Día de Muertos face paint. While Miguel performs on stage at the festivities, Sora fights off Heartless Shadows with his keyblade. We also get a look at Sora's Coco World-themed keyblade, a colorful weapon composed of guitars, sugar skulls, bones, and marigolds. The trailer shows Sora, Miguel, and Hector teaming up in battle.

Bluey movie trailer revealed, as exciting as anything Avengers at D23

Disney unveiled a teaser trailer for its feature-length Bluey movie at D23 on Friday, offering the first substantial look at the Heeler family’s jump from the small to big screen. It's very Bluey.

The trailer reveals just how Bluey will transform into a bigger, theater-worthy adventure. The shift to 3D is immediately noticeable, but the characters still move and behave like the Heelers. The Mandalorian and Grogu gets Disney Plus release date

The Mandalorian and Grogu brought Star Wars back to movie theaters, and now the duo is heading to their original home: Disney Plus. On Friday, Lucasfilm and Disney announced a home streaming release date for The Mandalorian and Grogu alongside the kickoff of D23, confirming that we'll all be streaming this summer's Star Wars flick starting in September.

After a digital release in July and an upcoming 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release, The Mandalorian and Grogu will finally come home to the masses on Sept. 2, when the film starts streaming on Disney Plus.

It’s been two months since the surprise drop of a new Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer during a Nintendo Direct livestream, and fans have a new reason to get their hopes up for more news very soon.

Disney is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts in 2027. That celebration kicks off this weekend with a special panel at Disney's D23 fan expo that brings together some of the key developers and voice actors behind the franchise. Anyone can watch the whole thing on YouTube — but only if they tune in live, Square Enix says.

Marvel Studios is rebooting its X-Men film franchise with an all-new cast. But the studio's plans for the X-Men under Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has been the source of much reporting, rumor, and speculation for the past few years.

At D23, Disney's fan convention, Marvel officially revealed who will be joining the MCU as its merry band of mutants, confirming who will be joining the one X-person revealed in this summer's runaway blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. On Friday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege welcomed an all-star cast to the stage, announcing who will be stepping into the roles of Cyclops, Storm, Professor X, Rogue, and more.

Marvel reveals first VisionQuest trailer at D23 — and it looks incredibly weird

Marvel Studios' VisionQuest, the conclusion of the series trilogy that started with WandaVision, got a first look at D23 on Friday, revealing what Paul Bettany's Vision has been up to since fleeing Westview. The first trailer for VisionQuest shows that Vision, much like his partner Wanda Maximoff, is really going through some stuff.

VisionQuest's first trailer also shows how little robot Vision we're getting in the series compared to human Vision. While there are glimpses of the character's robotic superhuman form, many of the robotic consciousnesses in VisionQuest are shown in human avatar form. That includes James Spader's Ultron, who looks just like... James Spader.

Disney shares Ahsoka season 2 first look and release date at D23

It’s been three years since the premiere of Ahsoka, Dave Filoni’s live-action follow up to his 2014 animated series Star Wars: Rebels. The Disney Plus show won’t deliver a payoff for its cliffhanger finale until 2027, but attendees of the annual D23 fan event in Anaheim, California got a first look at the threats facing the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and the New Republic with a teaser trailer reveal.

Star Wars fans also got a release date for Ahsoka season 2: The show returns to Disney Plus on Jan. 20, 2027.

New Avengers: Doomsday trailer revealed at D23

Marvel Studios gave MCU fans another look at this year's tentpole movie event, Avengers: Doomsday, in a new trailer that debuted at Disney's D23 fan convention. It's the same trailer that was shown to San Diego Comic-Con attendees at Marvel's Hall H panel, but millions will now get their first clear look at it.

In the new two-minute trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, we see members of the Fantastic Four — Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) — separately realizing and recounting to others the danger that Doctor Doom presents. We get a few glimpses of our heroes, from Ant-Man to Captain America to Thor, embracing their loved ones as Doom warns them that they're leading "stolen lives." Again, we see Thor face off against Doom, but now we get a longer look at the latter swatting the God of Thunder away like a pesky fly. It's a real display of Doom's power that culminates in the Latverian lord reviving a small army of broken Sentinels.
