BTS recently announced that the group will not submit any songs or albums for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. The boycott is the boy band’s response to the Recording Academy introducing a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, which will be new at the upcoming ceremony. K-pop has largely been underrecognized at music’s biggest night – with only a handful of artists earning nominations, and only one song with a trophy to its credit – and the latest category add was seen as a potential remedy.

While some view the move as excellent for foreign talents making their way in the United States, the seven members of BTS did not see it that way. The group has issues with the category, considering it limiting.

BTS had multiple singles eligible for Grammy consideration, and the musicians were likely contenders in fields like Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, a vertical where the chart-toppers have competed in the past, but never won. With BTS sitting out the upcoming ceremony, another famous name from the K-pop arena may emerge as a likely contender for a nod – if not a win – and she could follow in the footsteps of her own bandmate, who made history last year with her first solo nominations.

Jennie Could Become a First-Time Grammy Nominee

Jennie, one of the four singers in the K-pop girl group Blackpink, could very well end up a Grammy nominee for the first time this year. She joined Tame Impala on a remix of the alternative act’s single “Dracula,” and once the tune became a duet, it soared on charts globally.

For months, “Dracula” has remained a massive hit and a No. 1 on various Billboard rankings centered around rock and dance music, thanks to its cross-genre appeal. That said, “Dracula” seems like a natural fit for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, which more often than not these days caters to collaborations between soloists rather than true groups or bands. There are not many hugely successful acts of that sort in the pop space at the moment.

Jennie Could Join a Short List of K-Pop Nominees

If Jennie is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, she will become one of only a handful of K-pop stars to find themselves in the category. BTS has been up for the honor three times – one of the more impressive counts among all acts. The septet was first nominated with “Dynamite,” then returned the following year with “Butter.” In 2023, the musicians competed again alongside Coldplay with their collaborative smash “My Universe.”

At the most recent ceremony, two K-pop-leaning tunes were up for the trophy. “Golden,” taken from KPop Demon Hunters – officially credited to Huntr/x singers Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami – competed against “Apt.,” the team-up between Bruno Mars and fellow Blackpink star Rosé.

Neither claimed the honor, which went to “Defying Gravity” by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande from the first Wicked film. “Golden” did snag the Best Song Written for Visual Media trophy, becoming the first K-pop cut of any kind to win a Grammy.

Jennie May Follow Rosé With a Grammy Nod

Neither Jennie nor Blackpink has ever been nominated for a Grammy, but both could end up potential winners this year. Blackpink returned with an EP and at least one single that might snag a nod.

Rosé became the first member of the girl group to earn a nomination when “Apt.” ended up in the running for not only Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, but also both Record and Song of the Year. Rosé lost all three races, but landing in those categories was enough to make the recognition special, and certainly historic.

“Dracula” Could Potentially Compete in Several Fields

On the Billboard charts, “Dracula” has been a much bigger hit on rock and dance rankings than on those focused exclusively on pop. Despite that fact, the tune seems like something of a long shot when it comes to the Grammys rock fields.

It is possible that “Dracula” could be submitted in a dance category instead of Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Its sound and commercial success could make either Best Dance Pop Recording or perhaps Best Dance/Electronic Recording potential homes, depending on how the song is submitted and ultimately classified.

Despite where “Dracula” reigns on Billboard’s tallies, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance — which has become something of a catch-all for high-profile collaborations of this sort — seems like the obvious destination if the track ends up being nominated.

Jennie Could Be in the Running for Record and Song of the Year

As one of the bigger hits of the past year, “Dracula” should also be on the short lists for both Record and Song of the Year, two genre-agnostic prizes that are counted among the biggest honors bestowed each year by the Recording Academy.

Those categories are notoriously difficult to crack and hugely competitive, so if “Dracula” does not end up nominated for either honor, it will not be shocking. Even the top smashes are often left out. At the same time, whenever a tune becomes big enough, rises high enough on the charts and holds on for months, it will likely be on the minds of many voters.

Tame Impala Is Already a Grammy Winner

While Jennie would be a brand-new Grammy nominee, Tame Impala has not only competed before, but won. The act – which was once a group but is now essentially a solo venture fronted by Kevin Parker – has been nominated for six trophies.

Tame Impala has also won Best Dance/Electronic Recording at each of the past two ceremonies. The first victory came alongside Justice with “Neverender.” One year later, “End of Summer” scored the same honor. That recent track record could be a benefit to “Dracula” as Grammy voters will take note of the name and how much they clearly respect the musician.
